Look. I love life. But all the layers of dense language, confusing forms, and money out of my pocket that it takes to manage life’s upkeep in America has always been a struggle for me. I’m trying to get better at it.

I NEED to get better at it.

Especially now that my dog is running laps around me in that department.

See, just about a year before our marriage, my wife and I decided to get a puppy. And, following a few surprise trips to the emergency room (after he ate some of the bizarre things people left on the street), we decided it would be best to get him an insurance plan. The dense language was still there, but it was a hell of a lot simpler. In fact, I now know more about what I should say and do when he goes to the vet or the emergency room than I would for myself. I’m not proud of it.

Perhaps I just need someone to give me a treat whenever I fill out the right form.
